Production Technical Director

Location: New York, NY

Department: Production Services - NY

Type: Full Time

Min. Experience: Experienced

AbelCine — a full-service technology, staffing, and production partner for the broadcast, film, and corporate media industries — is seeking an experienced Production Technical Director to join our Production Services division as an employed consultant supporting one of our key clients.

In this role, you will lead live and branded-content productions from a state-of-the-art corporate studio. The position requires a balance of technical leadership and creative execution, overseeing control-room operations, managing production crews, and operating advanced systems, including Ross Overdrive, Carbonite/Acuity, Ultrix, and Disguise XR/LED environments. This is a unique opportunity to work in a state-of-the-art, multi-studio facility featuring cutting-edge production technology — including Sony broadcast and robotic systems, advanced lighting control, and immersive LED/XR environments. You’ll collaborate with a top-tier team of technical and creative professionals, producing premium visual content in a high-caliber corporate studio setting.

We’re seeking an individual who excels in high-pressure, real-time production environments and can deliver polished, broadcast-quality results with confidence, collaboration, and technical expertise.

Key Responsibilities

Creative Leadership & Show Calling

  • Lead and call live and pre-taped productions, shaping camera cuts, graphics, transitions, data integrations, and XR/LED compositing for compelling branded or sports/news-style formats.
  • Collaborate with producers, directors, designers, and talent to translate editorial or brand objectives into cohesive visual broadcasts.
  • Develop and refine the look and feel for recurring series (corporate shows, commentary, branded segments) — defining camera templates, graphics styles, pacing, and interaction rhythms.
  • Manage show flow and timing across studio, streaming, and mobile outputs, ensuring creative intent aligns with flawless technical execution.

Technical Direction & Operations

  • Operate and oversee live switching using Ross Carbonite/Acuity and Ross Overdrive automation, integrated with Ross Ultrix routing across SDI and ST 2110 IP environments.
  • Control virtual production workflows using Disguise VX2+/RX3 servers, LED video walls, camera tracking, and real-time Unreal/graphics integration.
  • Partner with engineering to test, maintain, and optimize control-room systems, signal integrity, and synchronization (PTP/NMOS).
  • Supervise live remote integrations (REMI, ENG, live feeds), ensuring seamless source switching within studio workflows.
  • Support system commissioning, operator training, and development of automation macros for repeatable, high-value productions.
  • Communicate effectively with creative, marketing, and executive teams to align production delivery with strategic objectives.

Required Experience & Skills

  • Undergraduate degree or equivalent combination of education, training and work experience
  • 7–10+ years as a Broadcast Technical Director or similar role in live news, sports, corporate communications, or branded live events.
  • Advanced experience with Ross Overdrive, Ross Carbonite/Acuity switchers, and Ross Ultrix routers in complex, live environments.
  • Deep understanding of signal flow (SDI/IP), automation, routing, intercoms, redundancy, and fail-safe design.
  • Hands-on experience with virtual production and LED workflows (Disguise, Unreal, camera tracking).
  • Strong creative judgment — understanding composition, pacing, and how technical direction enhances storytelling.
  • Proven leadership and communication skills — able to guide crews, make quick decisions under pressure, and mentor junior operators.
  • Familiarity with Ross Xpression and Voyager systems.
  • Comfortable managing multi-platform workflows, including studio broadcast, streaming, and hybrid live/recorded formats.

Preferred Attributes

  • Experience directing or switching sports broadcasts, corporate livestreams, or high-profile branded events.
  • Skilled in developing automation macros, show templates, and training programs.
  • Strong story sense — you intuitively know when to cut, hold, or move to elevate the moment.

Physical Effort

  • Work performed primarily in a studio and control room environment.
  • Requires periods of standing, sitting, and operating technical equipment.
  • Occasional lifting and moving of production equipment up to 25–30 lbs.
  • Ability to navigate studio spaces and handle cables, cameras, or other gear as needed.
  • Must maintain focus and attention to detail during extended live or pre-recorded sessions.
  • May require flexible scheduling, including early mornings, evenings, or weekends for productions.

Engagement Details:
